Every step of the way: amber workshops along the Amber Roads

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Since the beginning of amber research, the distribution of the raw material along the so-called amber roads has played a pivotal role to this field. Historically, the focus has been placed on specific scientific methods, such as infrared spectroscopy, which allow for the determination of ambers’ origin. Our project, “Amber Roads in the Early Iron Age in Central Europe,” funded by GAČR and DFG from 2023 to 2026, takes a multi-methodical and interdisciplinary approach to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of this fossil resin. We incorporate various methods, including infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and gas chromatography, which complement one another in their output and enable a more precise determination of ambers’ origin. In addition, archaeological and traceological investigations of amber findings have been conducted. The overarching goal of the project is to gain a better understanding of the provenance, distribution, and processing of amber during the Early Iron Age (Ha C – LT A). A significant gap in amber research has been the investigation of amber processing sites (workshops) in Central Europe. By examining the chaîne opératoire of amber and identifying the different phases of amber production, we aim to draw conclusions about these workshops in our project. These locations provide very important information concerning the distribution of raw material and finished products across Europe. Step by step, we seek to clarify the function of workshops along the trade routes and enhance our understanding of the dynamics of amber trade and production.
