Early Modern Glass Bottles from Prague-Hradčany: Technological and Decorative Insights through Filigree and Enamel Techniques

This study examines two glass bottles from the Early Modern period. Two different production techniques and decorative styles typical of the period are presented. The first bottle is a filigree glass technique in which opaque white glass threads, containing tin oxide (SnO2) as an opacifier, are embedded in transparent glass. The second bottle is decorated with enamelled floral motifs, and the enamel composition is critically evaluated using Raman spectroscopy. By combining these two case studies, the research highlights the diversity of glass production in early modern Europe, with a particular focus on Central Europe. The findings also invite comparisons with other regions, highlighting the technological advances that shaped production of both decorative and functional glass objects.
