Das Buch bietet eine gemeinsame Perspektive an die tschechische und österreichische Geschichte, die in zwölf Kapiteln von tschechisch-österreichischen Autorenteams geschrieben wurden. Es beschäftigt sich sowohl damit, was diese Ländern gemeinsam hatten als auch was sie geteilt und entfremdet hat. Neben chronologischen Kapiteln, die vor allem dem 19. und 20. Jahrhundert gewidmet sind, enthaltet das Buch auch Kapitel, die sich auf Mythen und Stereotype in der gemeinsamen Wahrnehmung, auf kulturelle und künstlerische Beziehungen und auf Mikrogeschichte des Grenzlandes konzentrieren.

The book offers a joint account of modern Czech and Austrian history written in twelve chapters by Czech-Austrian teams of historians. It deals both with topics that were shared as well as moment of division and estrangement. Besides chronological chapters covering mainly 19th and 20th century, there are also chapters focusing on myths and stereotypes in mutual perception, cultural and artistic contacts and microhistory of the borderlands.
