The chapter focuses on various ways of reception of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in the Czech society after the First World War. After 1918, the Habsburgs and Roman Catholic Church were considered a traditional enemy in the constructed “Czechoslovak national” narrative. Franz Ferdinand d’Este belonged to this category and his image underwent through the phases of demonization and mockery. The interwar Czechoslovak Republic reception of Franz Ferdinand and his death was created already in Czechoslovak exile circles during the First World War. He was described as a bigoted Germanizer and he was made responsible for the War. At the same time the personality of Franz Ferdinand fascinated people – by his tragic end and his morganatic marriage. An important role in this part was played by the chateau Konopiště – in the heart of Czech region, chosen by Franz Ferdinand to be his seat.
