Seit der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts ließen sich zehntausende Auswanderer aus dem Gebiet der heutigen Tschechischen Republik in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika nieder. Nach dem Vorbild der tschechisch-nationalen Leibesübungsvereine, die in ihrer „alten Heimat“ unter dem Namen „Sokol“ bekannt wurden, gründeten sie bereits in den 1860er Jahren ähnliche Vereine auch in ihrer „neuen Heimat“. Zahlreiche Funktionäre der Sokol-Organisationen sowohl in Amerika als auch in Mitteleuropa kamen seitdem in diversen offiziellen Schriftstücken auf die nationale Identität der Sokol-Vereinsmitglieder in der Übersee zu sprechen. Im dem Beitrag wird zum ersten Male der Versuch unternommen, anhand dieser Texte die wichtigsten Tendenzen im Identitätsdiskurs der führenden Repräsentanten der Sokol-Bewegung nachvollzuziehen und mit Blick auf den politisch-gesellschaftlichen Kontext zu erklären. Nicht unberücksichtigt bleibt ebenfalls die Frage, wie sich der Identitätsdiskurs mit der neuen politischen Lage in der Tschechoslowakei nach 1948 und 1989 veränderte.

Since the middle of the 19th century thousands of Czech emigrants settled down in the USA. Following the example of the Czech national gymnastic clubs “Sokol” they founded the same called clubs in their “new homeland”. Since then numerous Sokol-officials in the USA and in the Czech lands tried to define the national identity of the Sokol-gymnasts in the USA. Examining a lot of official documents this paper tries to find out the main tendencies in the identity discourse of the most important Sokol-officials and to put the whole problematic in the political and social context. The attention is also paid to the changes in the identity discourse in the new political situation in the Czechoslovakia between 1948 and 1989.
