Latent Czechoslovakism: a topic of politicization for nineteenth-century liberal elites
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The author attempts to shed light on “latent Czechoslovakism,” a term he coined himself. In contrast to existing literature, he understands Czechoslovakism in the latter half of the nineteenth century not merely as a cultural reciprocity but also as a political concept. While this period has always been historically defined as a time of cultural reciprocity for Czech-Slovak relations, the author subverts the primacy of this narrative and instead focuses on the transformation of cultural nationalism into political nationalism, investigating how Czech and Slovak liberal elites formulated their specific political programs, in which Czechoslovakism played a merely auxiliary role. The analysis effectively employs the network theory of power centers to analyse the dynamics between power hubs and examine how their changing relationships played out in specific policies. By doing so, the author reveals overlooked aspects of political rationality, which influenced Czech-Slovak cooperation and mutual support, and demonstrates how “latent Czechoslovakism” was a permanent presence in both the Czech and Slovak environments.
