Bohemian and English Painting in the Last Decades of the Fourteenth Century: Tracing the Bohemian Influence
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
In 1984, Amanda Simpson published a dissertation thesis The Connections between English and Bohemian Painting during the Second Half of the 14th Century. On the basis of stylistic analysis and wider comparisons, Simpson concluded that she was not able to trace any Bohemian elements in the English book and panel painting originated after arrival of Anne of Bohemia in England. However, a decade later Hana Hlaváčková suggested new dating of the Bible of Wenceslas IV, a pivotal Bohemian manuscript of the late 14th century. Nowadays, the dating into late 1370s or earlier 1380s is widely accepted. This fact reopened discussions on the Bohemian influence on English art after Richard’s marriage to Anne. Apparently, the dramatic shift in dating of the Wenceslas’ Bible has brought Queen Anne back on the stage in the role of a mediator of the Bohemian soft style into English environment. In my paper I will first target the term of the Bohemian soft style, its sources and development. In the next step, I will focus on the works of art which can be connected with the royal court of Richard II. Following the results of the detailed formal analysis as well as stylistic comparison, I will set the East Anglian art production at the end of the 14th century in order to confront the East Anglian synthesis of styles for the so-called Bohemian influence.
