Life-history variation in the short-lived herb Rorippa palustris: effects of germination date and injury timing
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Variability in life-history traits such as emergence and flowering time has ecological significance for plants of disturbed habitats. To elucidate life-history variation observed in field populations of the wetland pioneer root-sprouting herb Rorippa palustris, we tested the hypothesis that germination date and timing of injury cause co-occurrence of biennial and annual individuals at localities subjected to recurrent disturbance. Injury did not shift the mode of plants from spring cohorts into the summer annual life-history mode and the mode of summer cohorts into the winter annual life-history mode. Polycarpic perennials were rare among injured plants. About one quarter of plants injured in the vegetative phase regenerated after injury irrespective of cohort. Regeneration of plants in flowering and fruiting phase depended on date of injury in relation to length of day, being the most successful after summer solstice. Regeneration ability was correlated with overwintering ability and
