The genus Rhexinema was traditionally classified to the orded Chaetophorales. Due to cytological studies order Chaetophorales was reduced and some included members was assigned into various groups of Chlorophyta. The confusing data about Rhexinema have caused misclassification into other genera (Pleurastrum, Protoderma, Gloeotilopsis). We studied the morphological variability of all respective strains together with their phylogenetic relations and clarified the taxonomical delimitation of the genus Rhexinema.
