Rain gardens are nature-based systems that promote stormwater infiltration through plants and microorganisms. While known to support biodiversity, evidence is scarce. This study assessed their contribution to plant diversity in São Paulo, Brazil, by surveying 30 rain gardens and examining environmental, socioeconomic, and management factors influencing alpha and beta diversity within and around them. On average, rain gardens hosted 9.3 more species (4.8 exotic, 4.5 native) than adjacent areas, but management strongly shaped outcomes: 64 % of ornamental plants were exotic, some invasive. Herb and shrub cover negatively affected richness across all species groups and was the key factor explaining alpha diversity. Species dissimilarity between rain gardens and nearby sites exceeded 50 %, though no variable explained beta diversity. Per capita income increased native richness nearby but reduced exotic richness in rain gardens, revealing better management in wealthier areas and social inequality in green space quality. Despite enhancing urban flora, the dominance of exotic ornamentals constrains their ecological potential.
