Biological invasions are a major driver of global biodiversity loss and have substantial environmental, social, and economic impacts. Preventing the introduction and spread of alien species is the most effective way to reduce these impacts, but this depends on understanding where alien species occur and how invasions change over time. Reliable knowledge of invasion status and trends is therefore essential for research, policymaking, management, and future planning. However, existing information is fragmented, uneven, and incomplete, with most data limited to certain regions or taxonomic groups. Comprehensive global overviews are rare, making large-scale assessment difficult and strongly influenced by sampling and reporting biases. This study synthesizes available evidence to provide a global assessment of alien species across major taxonomic groups and IPBES regions. It shows that alien species are present in all regions, including Antarctica and remote islands, and that their numbers are increasing across all taxa and regions, often at accelerating rates. Significant knowledge gaps remain, especially for non-vertebrates, aquatic systems, Africa, Central Asia, and inconspicuous taxa. Reported figures represent minimum estimates, highlighting the need to address key challenges to improve invasion assessments.
