L’alerte a été donnée en 2023 au niveau mondial dans le rapport de l’IPBES (IPBES, 2023), l’équivalent du Giec (Groupe d’experts intergouvernemental sur l’évolution du climat) pour la biodiversité : « Les espèces exotiques envahissantes constituent une menace majeure pour la nature, les contributions de la nature pour l’homme et la qualité de vie » (traduit par nos soins). Leur impact avait très tôt inquiété dans les milieux insulaires, particulièrement vulnérables aux invasions biologiques. Aujourd’hui, c’est l’ensemble des écosystèmes qui sont touchés, ce qui génère un débat public assez vif, quant à la pertinence et l’intensité des méthodes de lutte. Mais qu’est-ce qu’une plante exotique envahissante, plus communément qualifiée d’invasive ? Qu’en est-il en ville ? Dans ce chapitre, nous en donnerons une définition et l’éclairerons d’exemples tirés detravaux d’inventaire menés avec des étudiants de licence et master de géographie de Sorbonne Université, dont les auteurs de ce chapitre.

The alert was raised globally in 2023 in the IPBES report (IPBES, 2023), the equivalent of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) for biodiversity: “Invasive alien species represent a major threat to nature, nature’s contributions to people, and quality of life” (our translation). Their impact had very early raised concern in island environments, which are particularly vulnerable to biological invasions. Today, all ecosystems are affected, giving rise to a fairly intense public debate regarding the relevance and intensity of control methods. But what exactly is an invasive alien plant, more commonly referred to as an invasive species? What about in urban environments? In this chapter, we will provide a definition and illustrate it with examples drawn from inventory studies carried out with undergraduate and master’s students in geography at Sorbonne University, who are also the authors of this chapter.
