Colin Ward, geb.: 14. August 1924, Wanstead (Essex), gest.: 11. Februar 2010, Ipswich (East Anglia), galt fast ein halbes Jahrhundert lang als der wohl berühmteste britische Anarchist. Er vertrat einen pragmatischen Anarchismus, der auf Verwurzelung im Alltagsleben und auf konkrete Lösungsvorschläge für die Gegenwart abzielte. Beruflich war Ward u.a. als Architekt, Stadt- und Landplaner sowie vor allem als politischer Publizist tätig. Ward war (Mit-)Herausgeber bedeutender anarchistischer Zeitschriften (z.B. von Freedom und Anarchy). Zahlreiche seiner Bücher befassten sich mit Geschichte und aktuellen Perspektiven des Anarchismus. Anarchy in Action, Wards bekanntestes Werk, entstammt der Atmosphäre einer aktivierten Linken um die Wende der 1960er und 1970er Jahre. Es zeigt aber vor allem sehr charakteristisch die pragmatische Tendenz im anarchistischen Denken des 20. Jahrhunderts. Dieses Denken löst sich allmählich von utopischen Visionen und von unrealistischen Auffassungen der Gegenwart.

Colin Ward, born: August 14, 1924, Wanstead (Essex), died: February 11, 2010, Ipswich (East Anglia), was considered the most famous British anarchist for almost half a century. He represented a pragmatic anarchism that aimed to be rooted in everyday life and concrete solutions for the present. Ward’s career included worked as an architect, urban and rural planner and above all as a political publicist. Ward was (co-) editor of important anarchist magazines (e.g. from Freedom and Anarchy). Many of his books dealt with the history and current perspectives of anarchism. Anarchy in Action, Ward’s most famous work, comes from the atmosphere of an activated left at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s. Above all, however, it shows the pragmatic tendency in anarchist thinking in the 20th century in a very characteristic way. This thinking gradually frees itself from utopian visions and unrealistic conceptions of the present.
