Cet article s’attaque à de vieux problèmes soulevés par la formulation et l’interprétation de quelques vers attribués à Parménide, et rapportés par Diels-Kranz sous DK 28 B 16. Dans une première partie, les auteurs font valoir que ces vers ne sont en fait ni en accord lexical ni théorique avec la doctrine authentique de Parménide. En outre, les interprétations habituelles de ce fragment sont insatisfaisantes : selon celles-ci, la raison et la pensée s’appuieraient sur un mélange de deux formes “matérielles”: la “nuit” et “feu”. Or cette lecture ne peut pas être conciliée avec ce que l’on sait du νόος et de νοεῖν dans d’autres fragments de Parménide. Dans la seconde partie de l’article, l’hypothèse est avancée que le véritable auteur de B 16 était Empédocle, dont la théorie de la pensée résultant d’un rapport des quatre éléments entre eux est bien documentée. Ces quatre éléments sont divins (voir les racines du fr. 6) et doués de pensée, leur mélange et leur séparation permettent d’expliquer les dispositions (persistantes ou transitoires) de la pensée et les différences individuelles de pensée, qui ne s’interprètent pas de façon satisfaisante dans le cadre de la doctrine de Parménide. L’étude comprend également de nouvelles interprétations de certains fragments d’Empédocle (en particulier B 108, B 106, B 103, B 105, B 107, B 109, B 134, B 8, B 110).

The article focuses on the age-old problems connected with wording and interpretation of the verses that are listed as DK 28 B 16. In the first part, it is argued that the verses do not fit lexically or meaningfully into the authentic doctrine of Parmenides. In addition, all standard interpretations of the fragment are very unsatisfactory: according to them, reason and thought are based on a mixture of two “material” forms (i.e. “night” and “fire”), but this concept cannot be reconciled with the concept of νόος and νοεῖν in other fragments. In the second part of the article, therefore, the hypothesis is offered that the true author of B 16 was Empedocles, whose theory of thought resulting from a ratio of four “roots” is well documented. These four elements are and gifted with thought, and therefore their mixing and separating enables to explain the thought dispositions (persistent as well as transient) and the individual differences in thinking that cannot be meaningfully interpreted within Parmenides’ doctrine. The study also includes new interpretations of some of Empedocles’ fragments (esp. B 108, B 106, B 103, B 105, B 107, B 109, B 134, B 8, B 110).
