Monografie předkládá interpretaci staročeských dialogických básní z pohledu výzkumu středověké literární recepce (rukopisného kontextu a tiskařských publikačních portfolií) a literárněhistorické antropologie. Rozebírá dochované texty v jejich vzájemných vztazích a pravděpodobných dobových funkcích a účincích. Autor usiluje porozumět básni Podkoní a žák v literárním poli pozdního středověku, srovnává ji proto s ostatními dialogickými skladbami z konce 14. století, s poezií z doby husitských válek a s básněmi o smrti. Věnuje se také ověřování literárněhistorických výkladů a konceptualizací, jejichž autorky a autoři se v 19. a 20. století snažili zkoumaná díla využít při rýsování obecnějších dějinných řad a vývojových dynamik. Klade důraz na sledování jevů, jež ve veršovaných dialozích zvýrazňují přesahující tendence přinejmenším mezi 14. a 16. stoletím. Nejprve se věnuje básním tzv. Smilovy školy – popisuje zejména náboženské a sebereflexivní těžiště Nové rady a sleduje vztah lyriky a toxicity ve Sváru vody s vínem. Analyzuje také spory duše s tělem a Rozmlouvání člověka se Smrtí. V básních Hádání Prahy s Kutnou Horou a Václav, Havel a Tábor upozorňuje na rysy, jež je spojují se staršími básněmi, ale i na jejich útěšný a k sobě obrácený rozměr. V závěrečném výkladu Podkoního a žáka je toto srovnání využito k zodpovězení otázky funkcí a smyslu této básně. Autor snáší argumenty pro návrh čtení, jež vrací do hospodské hádky hlas, který v básni nezaznívá.

The monograph presents an interpretation of Old Czech dialogical poems from the perspective of research on medieval literary reception (manuscript context and printing publication portfolios) and literary-historical anthropology. It analyses the extant texts in their interrelationships and probable contemporary functions and effects. The author seeks to understand the poem The Groom and the Student in the literary field of the late Middle Ages, and therefore compares it with other late 14th-century dialogical compositions, with poetry from the Hussite Wars, and with poems about death. He also examines the literary historical interpretations and conceptualizations whose authors in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries sought to use the works under study to draw more general historical theses and developmental dynamics. It emphasizes the tracking of phenomena that highlight overlapping tendencies in the verse dialogues at least between the 14th and 16th centuries. The author first examines the poems of the so-called Smil School - describing in particular the religious and self-reflexive focus of the New Council and tracing the relationship between lyricism and toxicity in the Dispute of Water and Wine. He also analyses the conflicts between the soul and the body and The Conversation of Man with Death. In the poems Dispute of Prague and Kutná Hora and Václav, Havel and Tábor, he draws attention to the features that link them to the earlier poems, but also to their comforting and inward-looking dimension. In the final interpretation of The Groom and the Student, this comparison is used to answer the question of the poem's function and meaning. The author makes a case for a reading proposal that brings a voice back into the pub argument that does not resonate in the poem.
