Aromatic Substances as Offerings for the Gods. Multi-disciplinary Approaches to Exotic Ingredients in the Temple Cult

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

The Edfu “laboratory” records a list of names of 21 resins and aromatic woods, 14 of which are described as necessary for the making of unguents to anoint the limbs of the gods (the statuary) in the temple cult. The aromatic resins of this list are referred to as antu and often translated as “myrrh”. Parallel texts are preserved in the so-called Punt Hall in the temple of Athribis (Leitz et al. 2014), but here we focus on the Edfu material since it is better preserved. The list has been translated and commented on by several editors (Leitz 2014, 502-507, Aufrère 2005, 254-255, Chermette/ Goyon 1996, 47-82, Chermette 2002, 29-35, Goyon 2002, 51-65). Concerning the Edfu version of the list, Ebbell (1939) made the first translation and interpretation, including suggestions for botanical identifications of the plant material. His suggestisons were based on comparisons with classical authors like Disocorides and Theophrastus. He did not consider botanical remains or archaeological data. This study revists these identifications using an experimental procedure in two parts: 1.First, linguistic and cultural analysis provide a set of candidate botanical identifications for some items on the list, which seem to have foreign names: 2.Second, candidates are tested in order to further narrow down the set of plausible identifications: and these results are compared with parallel ones conducted on processing methods for myrrh oil described in Greek sources. What follows is the current state of research and represents preliminary results of the project Alchemies of Scent.
