The nation-state remains a central methodological focus across the social sciences, particularly within political science and sociology. Its historical emergence is closely tied to the development of the modern world—typically framed through Eurocentric perspectives—and to the concurrent decline of empire as a dominant political form. Conventional understandings of modernity have long positioned empires and nation-states on opposite sides of a temporal and cultural divide, a dichotomy that recent scholarship has increasingly challenged. This conference explores Europe’s post-imperial and post-colonial legacies through three interconnected strands: conceptual, cultural, and geopolitical.
