In the paper, we analyze the evolution of the concept of socialist humanism in post-war Poland (1946–1979). In contrast to the common conflation of Marxist humanism and revisionism, we argue that humanist tendency in socialist Europe was a more complex and diverse phenomenon. Inspired by pre-war socialist traditions, the term “socialist humanism” was intercepted by Adam Schaff, and, from that moment on, it served to legitimize the system and defend it from both external and internal criticism in three various contexts (the implementation of the system, the upheavals of the Polish Thaw, the scientific-technical revolution and the peaceful coexistence with the West). The evolution of this concept reflects the shifts in the fundamental functions of Marxist official philosophy, from answering the moral dilemmas of Stalinization to supporting the productivist ideology of development in the 1970s.
