The Anthropocene is defined by a paradoxical activity and passivity: humanity’s unprecedented power is associated with a huge increase in the unintended consequences of human action, with the emergence of natural forces beyond human control. According to Renaud Barbaras, the question of human passivity can only be fully addressed provided we answer a question not usually raised: Where does the passivity of sensory receptivity come from? In its depth, Barbaras reveals the activity of the subjective movement of desire, and in the heart of this movement an even deeper arche-passivity towards that which incites desire – the arche-process of nature in which human movement is involved. In doing so, Barbaras creates his own version of eco-phenomenology in which he originally clarifies the anthropocene paradox. This chapter will focus on his nuanced re-articulation of Merleau-Ponty’s concept of the “flesh of the world” as it extends beyond human corporeality to encompass the more-than-human realm, revealing nature’s intrinsic value and various non-human ways of its manifestation.
