Die gegenseitigen Beziehungen zwischen böhmischen Könige und Prager Bischöfe waren während des ganzen Mittelalters von grosser politischer Bedeutung. Die Rivalität zwischen dem König und dem Bischof hat sich in der Innen- und Außenpolitik der BöhmischenLänder gespiegelt. Der weltliche Herrscher bemühte sich ständig, die Besetzung des bischöflichen Stuhles zu beeinflüssen, trotz dem schon völlig durchgesetzten kanonischen Recht und der stabilisierten Prozedur der kanonischen Wahl des Bischofs. Doch diePolitik der Bischöfe war nur ausnahmsweise ganz in Einklang mit Interessen der Herrscher. So einen Einklang gab es z.B. zwischen Karl IV. und Ernst von Pardubice.

Mutual relations between kings of Bohemia and bishops of Prague were of large political importance over the entire Middle Ages. The rivalry between them affected both the inner and the foreign politics of the Czech Lands. Even after the canon law had been fully enforced and the canonical election of bishops had become a rule, the secular rulers continued in their efforts to affect the nominations of bishops. Yet the policies of the bishops were only rarely in full accordance with the interests of the rulers. Such accordance took place e.g. between Charles IV and Ernest of Pardubice.
