Das Buch befasst sich mit der Kirchengeschichte der Oberlausitzer Stadt Zittau zwischen dem späten 13. und frühen 17. Jahrhundert. Sein Zweck liegt darin, sich vor allem über die herkömmliche Epochengrenze (Spätmittelalter – Frühe Neuzeit bzw. vorreformatorische römische Kirche – protestantische Reformation/Konfessionalisierung) hingwezusetzen, und stattdessen einen Wandel zahlreicher Aspekte vormoderner Religiosität als sog. Praxis pietatis (Stiftungswesen, rituelles Leben u. a.) in einem längeren Zeitrahmen auszuloten.

The book deals with the church history of the town of Zittau in Upper Lusatia between the late 13th and early 17th centuries. Its purpose is primarily to move beyond the conventional epoch boundary (late Middle Ages - early modern times or pre-Reformation Roman Church - Protestant Reformation - confessionalization), and instead to change numerous aspects of pre-modern religiosity as so-called Praxis pietatis (foundation, ritual life, etc.) sound out in a longer time frame.
