Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This article focuses on the biography, work, and legacy of a prominent woman in the Czech-American community, Josefa Humpal-Zemanová (1870–1906), who excelled as a journalist and leading personality in the women’s movement in the Czech lands as well as in “Czech” America. Her importance lies primarily in the fact that in Chicago, the center of Czech immigration in the USA, she founded the publication Ženské listy [Women’s Pages], which became the most widely-read Czech expatriate magazine for women. Thanks to her very good knowledge of the milieux of the Czech lands and of the United States she was able to reflect the social conditions, the position of women, and everyday life in the United States. Particular attention is devoted to Humpal-Zemanová’s opinions concerning women’s emancipation and women’s position. This article is based upon materials from Humpal-Zemanová’s estate, her published texts, and her correspondence.
