Ubi bene, ibi patria?

Ubi bene, ibi patria? The cosmopolitanism of Bohemian scholars in times of change (1618-30)
Popis výsledku anglicky
With the outbreak of the Thirty Years War, the social situation in the Bohemian lands became increasingly uncertain and restless. Professors at Prague University issued appeals for peace, while students and intellectuals became radicalised. It was still fashionable to deepen one’s knowledge and, if possible, complete one’s studies with a doctorate at foreign universities. After the victory of the Catholic faction in the Battle of White Mountain in 1620, non-Catholic students in foreign countries were suddenly faced with the problem that they were not allowed to return home without converting to Catholicism. This situation caused a major change in the typical career path of students – instead of returning with the acquired degree, a large number of them had to seek employment abroad. This drove graduates to travel all over Europe to find a job. Suddenly, they were visiting countries that had not previously been considered typical travel destinations, such as the Baltic States, Scandinavia or even the New World. Probably the best-known example of this forced peripatetic activity was Johannes Amos Comenius. In this article, we outline the typical careers of Bohemian scholars after 1620 and divide them into the following groups: 1. scholars who pursued their own profession or specialisation abroad (e.g. Johannes Screta of Zavorzitz in Switzerland), 2. scholars who had to change their specialisation (George Holik in the Baltic region), 3. scholars who could not find employment (Thomas Procopius in Scandinavia), 4. scholars who, after long travels and changing occupations, returned and converted (such as Martin Nesselius). The article compares the careers of the exiles with typical careers of Czech students abroad around the year 1600 and draws general conclusions from the comparison.
