Crisis and Innovation: The Constitutional Evolution of Poland-Lithuania during the Interregnum (1572–1573)
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Chapter analyses the constitutional crisis triggered by the death of Sigismund II Augustus, the last male Jagiellon, in 1572. His death without an heir exposed legal ambiguities in succession and destabilised the political order established by the Union of Lublin. The chapter argues that the interregnum, though marked by factional conflict and foreign intervention, became a catalyst for constitutional innovation. The nobility asserted its political authority, redefining the balance of power within the Commonwealth. The Henrician Articles of 1573 formalised the principle of free royal election and imposed lasting limitations on royal power, consolidating the elective and republican character of the Polish-Lithuanian political system.
