Sweden's path to great power with the help of battlefields and libraries.

  • Popis výsledku anglicky

Jenny Öhman's study analyzes Sweden's rise to great power status between 1611 and 1718, highlighting military expansion and cultural acquisitions. It demonstrates how Sweden, initially lacking a rich cultural heritage, enhanced its status by systematically seizing valuable books and artifacts from European battlefields, particularly during the Thirty Years' War. The study focuses on General Hans Christoph Königsmarck's attack on Prague in 1648, which led to the looting of significant literary and artistic treasures. These acquisitions enriched Swedish libraries and strengthened the country's intellectual foundations. The strategic accumulation of knowledge complemented military successes, illustrating that Sweden’s path to great power was not solely determined on the battlefield but also through the deliberate advancement of education and culture. The study emphasizes the crucial role of war booty in shaping Sweden’s intellectual landscape and its broader geopolitical ambitions.
