The chapter reviews the research on the effects of mass media, in its traditional form (TV, newspaper, radio), on intergroup relations in peaceful and post-conflict settings. In the first part of the chapter, we discuss how outgroup members are depicted in the mass media with respect to salience and framing of intergroup issues. Next, we review studies that directly link mass media content to prejudice, a marker for the quality of intergroup relations in peaceful settings. We focus on studies that connect individual-level prejudice with a) content of mass media and b) individuals’ exposure to mass media content. In the second part of the chapter, we delve into the significance of mass-media interventions in fostering peace in post-conflict settings. We then look at the research that explores the role of everyday mass media, including news, TV series, and movies, in shaping perceptions of former adversaries and facilitating intergroup forgiveness and reconciliation. Lastly, we think about ways to improve intergroup relations by using mass media influence.
