Crisis and Growth: Narrative Processing of Difficult Experiences in Midlife
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This study explores the relatively little studied developmental phase of midlife, with focus on its narrative dimensions. Recognizing that midlife often leads to a re-evaluation of personal history and confrontation with challenging past experiences, our research employs a holistic–formal approach to analyze the narratives of Czech adults aged 40 to 60. The primary objective of this research was to understand and identify the adaptive and successful narrative ways of processing past difficulties. We have conducted a narrative analysis of 34 midlife story interviews, examining narrative categories such as thematic lines, agency, values, beliefs, and reflexivity. This led to the identification and description of four distinct genres of midlife adaptive processing of negative experience that result in growth. We call them Let it be, Engagement balancing, Metanoia, and Ironic (di)stance.
