Aus dem großmährischen Machtzentrum von Mikulčice (Tschechische Republik) stammt eine außergewöhnliche Menge von prächtigen Schmuckstücken, Kleidungs- sowie Ausrüstungsbestandteilen hoher kunstgewerblicher Qualität. Die meist aus Grabkontext stammenden Gegenstände sind oft aus Gold oder Silber hergestellt und mit Juweliertechniken wie Treiben, Repoussés, Granulation, Filigran oder Glaseinsatz verziert. Obwohl bei der Mehrzahl dieser Erzeugnisse ihre lokale Produktion vorausgesetzt wird, fehlen – bis auf Ausnahmen – beweiskräftige Befunde von Werkstätten für feine Metallproduktion. Ist es ein charakteristisches, durch den Prozess der Archäologisierung einer lebenden Kultur beeinflusste Merkmal oder hat es eine andere Erklärung? Die im Rahmen dieses Beitrags durchgeführte Überprüfung des Fundfonds von Mikulčice sowie Berücksichtigung des gegenwärtigen Erkenntnisstandes im Bereich der mährischen Zentren des 9. Jahrhunderts soll zur Beantwortung dieses Problems beitragen.

An exceptional number of magnificent pieces of jewellery, dress accessories and equipment of high arts and crafts quality come from the Great Moravian power center of Mikulčice (Czech Republic). The objects, most of which come from a funerary context, are often made of gold or silver and decorated with jeweller's techniques such as embossing, repoussé, granulation, filigree or glass inserts. Although local production is assumed for the majority of these products, there are – with a few exceptions – conclusive findings from workshops for fine metal production. Is it a characteristic feature influenced by the process of archaeologizing a living culture, or does it have some other explanation? The examination of the find fund from Mikulčice carried out within the framework of this article and taking into account the current state of knowledge in the area of the Moravian centers of the 9th century should contribute to answering this problem.
