The Mušov Region – A Complex Scene of Roman-Germanic Interactions during the Marcomannic Wars
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
A significant impact of the Marcomannic Wars in the development of the Germanic tribes in Central Europe was anticipated long before the first archaeological excavations. The beginning of the systematic discovery of the archaeological traces of the army of Emperor Marcus Aurelius in the area west of the Little Carpathians, which we now perceive as the settlement zone of the Marcomanni, began almost a hundred years ago at the site Mušov-Burgstall. Since then, our sources have constantly been expanding and allow us to outline an increasingly detailed picture of the activities of the Roman army in this region. We can increasingly identify various forms of its interactions with local Germans, especially with their elites. Today, thanks to the knowledge of about 25 Roman camps, it is possible to identify the geostrategic parameters of the Roman military occupation of the Marcomanni territory. Moreover, especially on the example of some Germanic settlements and the famous chieftain’s grave near Mušov, we also see their differentiated relations to the Roman occupying power.
