Germanic communities of the ‘Marcomannic’ settlement zone: structure and dynamics
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The Germanic societies of the Middle Danube region during the Roman Period have long been the subject of archaeological research. The available data is vast, heterogeneous, and scattered across various published sources. This book serves as the primary output of the research project funded by the Czech Science Foundation (GA20-11070S), focusing on comprehensive and unprecedented heuristics of archaeological data within the ‘Marcomannic’ settlement zone (Moravia, Lower Austria, and the Slovakian Záhorie region). The depth and scope of the collected data enable a quantitative exploration of key activity areas (residential and funerary), specific contexts (e.g. pit houses, graves), and individual artefacts (e.g., brooches, militaria, Roman coinage, tools) in order to develop a series of proxy indicators to assess various aspects of potential development trajectories of the Germanic societies in the region. Additionally, an analysis of spatial distributions—particularly of Roman-origin imports—reveals patterns of the Germanic power organisations and administration structures. A social anthropological perspective is also incorporated to examine vertical power differentiation and administrative structures within these societies. Furthermore, the book presents quantitative reconstructions of demographic conditions in the region. While it does not aim to cover all aspects of material culture (which will be addressed in future studies), it offers a novel, data-driven approach to the archaeological record. By focusing on quantitative methodologies, this study provides new insights into the societal structures and interactions of Germanic communities in the ‘Marcomannic’ settlement zone.
