Die Monographie ist eine umfassende Analyse und zugleich ein Versuch, das größte Gräberfeld der Elbgermanen (Sueben) in Europa zu interpretieren. Sie ist eine Fortsetzung des ersten Bandes, in dem die archäologischen Quellen (Katalog und Tafeln) vorgestellt wurden. Der einzigartige Datensatz erlaubte es erstmals in der Forschung zur römischen Kaiserzeit, Raum für die Erstellung eines detaillierten typologisch-chronologischen Konzepts zu schaffen, in dem es oft notwendig war, einige neue Typologien von Artefakten zu entwickeln. Das Buch stellt einen großen Fortschritt bei der Untersuchung der Sozialstruktur der Germanen im Hinblick auf Grabausstattungen und Raumbeziehungen dar. Auch zur Frage des Bestattungsrituals und insbesondere zur Bedeutung von Kultgegenständen in der Nekropole wurden neue Erkenntnisse gewonnen. Drei Sonderbeiträge zur Anthropologie (J. Chochol), zum antiken Glas (H. Sedláčková und D. Rohanová) und zur elementaren Zusammensetzung germanischer und römischer Metallartefakte (J. Frána und M. Fikrle) lieferten sehr wichtige Erkenntnisse. Die Publikation wird ein unentbehrliches Handbuch für das Studium der materiellen Kultur der Germanen in der älteren römischen Kaiserzeit und für die Archäologie der mitteleuropäischen Barbaricum werden.

The monograph is a comprehensive analysis and at the same time an attempt to interpret the largest burial site of the Elbe Germans peoples (Suebi) in Europe. It is a continuation of the first volume, in which archaeological sources (catalogue and tables) were presented. The unique data set allowed for the first time in the research on the Roman period to create space for the creation of a detailed typological-chronological concept, in which it was often necessary to develop some new typologies of artefacts. The book represents a major advance in the process of examining the social structure of the Germanic people in terms of grave unit furnishings and spatial relationships. New insights have also been made on the issue of burial ritual, and especially on the significance of cult objects in the necropolis. Three special contributions on anthropology (J. Chochol), on ancient glass (H. Sedláčková and D. Rohanová) and on the elemental composition of Germanic and Roman metal artefacts (J. Frána and M. Fikrle) provided very important insights. The publication will become an indispensable handbook for the study of the material culture of the Germanic people in the early Roman period and for the archaeology of Central European barbaricum.
