Mediterranean Roots of Great Moravian Luxury Jewellery

Gold and silver jewellery, currently called as „Great Moravian“, is found in cemeteries from the 9th century and 1st half of 10th century in area of former Czechoslovakia and western Hungary. Since the inter-war period, the Czech and Slovak archaeologists were concerned with the question of the origin of this jewellery group. In the presented article, selected jewellery types are analyzed in this regard, with territorial scope as large as possible. The earrings with four beads made of sheet metal rank among the types of jewellery with supra-regional distribution – beside of Great Moravian area, they occur on large territory, from Crete to Bornholm. In different regions, the specimens of this type are characterized by specific construction and decoration features, but they are always more or less dependent on Byzantine models. Great Moravian earrings with basket beads made of beaded wire have less numerous parallels in other parts of Europe, but especially the pair of golden earrings of Preslav treasure demonstrates very clearly that such earrings are by no means a Moravian invention. On the other hand, we cannot rule out the possibility that some subtypes are genuine Great Moravian products, especially those lacking accurate parallels in other parts of Europe, e.g. earrings with a biconical accumulation of basket beads under the lower arc. The finger-rings with hollow hemispherical bezel completely covered by coarse granulation are another example of supra-regional type which spread from Eastern Mediterranean do South-east, Central and East Europe.
