Iron as a Commodity and Currency in 9th-Century Moravia

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Iron played a vital role in the early medieval Moravian polity, which emerged in the eastern part of Central Europe during the 9th century and collapsed at the beginning of the 10th century. Iron tools were essential for agricultural intensification, supporting the growth of emergent central places. Weapons and military equipment facilitated predatory resource extraction, primarily through the activities of Moravian mounted warrior bands. In the form of currency (axe-shaped bars of various sizes and weights), iron served as a medium for social accounting and pre-monetary exchange. Later, it may have also functioned as a form of monetary token, used at nodal points within the nascent Moravian market system. Given the multifaceted role of iron in 9th-century Moravia, this presentation will explore what the archaeological record reveals about its integration into the political economies of Moravian elites and how it helped sustain the complexity of social, economic, and political relations within this early medieval polity.
