Traces of use on chased sheet-metal spherical buttons (9th century, Czech Republic) from an experimental perspective

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Jewellery and clothing accessories represent a significant cultural phenomenon within early medieval material culture, embodying the integration of diverse cultural influences and serving as an important aspect of regional identities, particularly among elites. Sheet-metal spherical buttons with chased decoration are a regionally specific type of artefact primarily associated with grave finds from Central Europe. Due to the absence of written sources or iconographic evidence, uncertainties persist regarding their application to garments and their functional role in a living society. Therefore, surface analysis is crucial for understanding traces of use. A targeted interdisciplinary experimental study was conducted to address questions related to the use of these buttons. This research involved a team comprising annarchaeologist, a jeweller, an SEM analyst, and reenactors. Scientific replicas of the buttons, faithfully reproduced using original jewellery-making techniques and corresponding to the material composition of the originals, were tested in a controlled experiment. The study included their application, presumed manipulation, and wearability assessment. This contribution will introduce the findings of the experiments carried out so far and discuss their significance for understanding the early medieval Central European elite and its clothing traditions.
