The mail coat from Ciumeşti. Contemporary insights on an early ring armour
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Discovered in 1961, the mail armour from Ciumești was long regarded as the earliest evidence of this type of armour. However, recent advances in the study of mail, especially its origins, make a re-evaluation of this artefact necessary. The invention of mail is now dated to the transition between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, while the mail from Ciumești belongs to the La Tène C1 period. It is therefore an early example, but not the earliest one. Current knowledge of the manufacture of Iron Age mail armour allows us to identify the preserved elements of the Ciumești mail and to propose a hypothetical reconstruction, probably featuring large shoulder guards typical of the earlier designs. It should be noted that the Ciumești armour uses butted rings, offering minimal protection. This should not be interpreted as a stage in an evolution butted to riveted rings, since riveted mail already existed from the beginning. The use of these butted rings is rather an indication of limited access to prestige goods, resulting in imitated forms of armour.
