    Many of the technologies we take for granted today owe their existence to military necessity. The internet, originally developed by the U.S. Department of Defense, now connects billions worldwide. GPS, first a military tool, guides us through city streets. Even everyday conveniences like canned food and duct tape have their roots in military research. Ancient Rome was no different. Warfare shaped its history, and the demands of the battlefield drove technological progress. Stronger weapons, better armour, and more efficient supply chains spurred advances in metallurgy, engineering, and logistics, many with lasting effects. For example, the mass production of iron sheets, developed for Roman armour, transformed metalworking. Roman roads, built for troop movement, laid the groundwork for trade and communication networks that endured for centuries. The Marcomannic Wars, a defining conflict fought in what is now Moravia, were crucial to the Roman Empire’s history and had a profound influence on military technology. The Institute of Archaeology, Brno, has a long tradition of researching both the broader context of these wars and the materials that illuminate their role in the evolution of Roman military equipment. To uncover these technological breakthroughs, this project combines historical detective work, cutting-edge science, and hands-on experimentation. Artefacts like helmets, armour, and weapons are being carefully examined using high-tech tools such as X-ray fluorescence, radiography, and electron microscopy. These methods reveal hidden details about the materials and manufacturing techniques behind Roman military equipment. But some questions can only be answered through hands-on experimentation. By recreating Roman military gear using ancient methods, we can test their production techniques and durability, offering new insights into their effectiveness. Warfare may have driven destruction, but it also forged the tools that shaped civilisations.n
