Reading the Palimpsest: Experimental Knapping and the Search for Gravettian Workshop Areas
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The contribution presents results from an experimental flint knapping project designed to simulate the spatial and technological features of lithic artefact production, with a focus on evaluating the interpretative potential of such patterns for Upper Paleolithic sites in Central Europe. The purpose of the experiment was to document the knappers' raw material exploitation efficiency and spatially evaluate the distribution patterns of debris and blanks from different phases of the core reduction sequence and with respect to various levels of the knappers' experience. The presented experimental dataset provides a comparative framework for reconstructing knapping episodes within complex sites, such as those of the Gravettian Pavlov-Dolní Věstonice-Milovice settlement area. The integration of behavioural variables, such as motor skills, decision-making, and error-making, may significantly enhance our ability to distinguish single-event workshop areas and living floors within intensively occupied sites.
