Foraging strategy of mouflon during the hunting season as related to food supply
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Diet of mouflon (rumens) was analysed from two localities which differ in food supply. In northern Moravia (NM) secondary forests with dominance of conifers prevail. In southern Moravia (SM) broad leaved forests dominated. In both diets broad-leaved treeprevail during the autumn-winter season. In SM mouflon concentrated on a highly caloric diet of various seeds (34%v). Nutritional value (metabolized energy) of the diet was correlated with diet quality (seeds, broadleaved trees). Mouflon is considered as a typical grazer, but we revealed that during the autumn and the winter period both its Moravian subpopulations concentrate on browse and, if possible, on the most caloric foods to get enough energy for successful wintering. In SM the individuals havethe tendency to be heavier (NS) and also the amount of their fat was greater (p = 0.035). Body conditions of mouflons were related to the quality of the food supply in the biotope.
