Abundance and its dynamics was studied mostly using snow-tracking (at Poľana, Turiec, Horná Orava, etc.) but also a new method, non-invasive genetic sampling was used at one study site (Slovenský raj). In Poľana, apparent decrease in otter numbers was recorded, which seems to be connected with the decrease of food supply in the streams. In Slovenský raj, increase of population size between 2000 and 2003 surveys was observed, which was in concordance with the general trend of otter recovery all over Slovakia. Non-invasive genetic sampling provided similar estimates of population size as snow-tracking, but furthermore also some additional information on sex and movement of individuals.
