The aim of the paper is to refer to impacts of extreme floods both in the Ostrava basin with industrial and mining aglomeration and in the foothils of the Moravsko-slezské Beskydy Mts. in the Western Carpathians. Positive role of river channelization inflood protection is appreciated however challenged and some negative consequences of braided alluvial channels transformations for sustainable development are emphatized. The morphological characteristic of gravel bed channels and its behaviour in time of floods have been given with some historical remarks.
