Geodiversity and ecosystem services
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This chapter underscores the crucial role of geodiversity within the ecosystem services (ES) framework, traditionally focused mainly on biodiversity. An inclusive approach is essential to recognise the contributions of abiotic phenomena across regulation, support, provisioning, and cultural ES. Reviews of various classification systems elucidate how these frameworks assess and categorise the services ecosystems offer. It is critical to achieve a comprehensive strategy that acknowledges the deep connection between geodiversity and biodiversity in maintaining ecological functions. Key examples include the impact of geodiversity on carbon sequestration, climate regulation, its fundamental support for biodiversity, and its role in several aspects of culture. Incorporating geodiversity into environmental policy and planning is vital to enhancing ecosystem resilience and sustainability. Integrating geosystem services into broader environmental management strategies can lead to a holistic approach to conservation and sustainability that aligns with interdisciplinary scientific research and public policy frameworks.
