This chapter, written by Táňa Dluhošová, examines social stability and mobility in Taiwan during the period after 1945, following the transition of the island from Japanese colonial rule to the control of the Republic of China. The author investigates how the political elite responded to major political and social changes that occurred after the end of World War II, and how their “habitus” (socially constructed ways of perceiving and acting) was reshaped during these historical transitions.
