Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
China's territorialisation of the Himalayan Frontier. Case of Nepal:nThe Covid-19 pandemic enabled an abrupt closure of state borders without further justification. This severely impacted the lives of Himalayan people inhabiting the frontier of the PRC. In Nepal, cross-border mobility was essential for maintaining economic, social and cultural ties. Although the Himalayan communities longed for the re-establishment of cross-border traffic, at most Nepali–PRC border crossings traffic remained suspended long after the pandemic had receded. The PRC used this time to fortify and consolidate the border, to claim disputed territories and even to challenge the territorial sovereignty of its neighbours through infrastructure development. Moreover, it introduced new rules for border traffic, limiting established patterns of cross-border mobility. Drawing on research in north-eastern Nepal (Taplejung and Sankhuwasabha districts) during the border closure and immediately after the reopening, this presentation examines how life in frontier areas was affected by restrictions on cross-border mobility and by China’s various methods of frontier territorialization.
