Destruction and Reconstruction of Architectural Heritage in Mosul

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

The destruction of Mosul’s architectural heritage was a complex process rooted in post-World War I modernization efforts that set in motion the long-term degradation of the city’s historic fabric. In the second half of the twentieth century, significant monuments were radically rebuilt without regard for their original designs, significantly reducing their heritage value. The situation worsened dramatically during the occupation by the Islamic State (2014–2017), when nearly 50 monuments, including key religious buildings that were central to the spiritual and social life of the population, were systematically destroyed. The subsequent Battle of Mosul (2016–2017) accelerated this destruction, causing further collateral damage to the city’s historic core. Post-war revitalization efforts, led by both Iraqi and international organizations, have achieved significant success in the faithful restoration of important structures. Concurrently, modern, radical reconstruction projects have been undertaken without proper archaeological investigations or historical documentation. Despite its admirable speed, this approach has undermined the historical authenticity of many reconstructed buildings. Historically and archaeologically informed reconstructions account for only a small proportion of projects. A significant problem in the revitalization process is the insufficient prioritization of the needs of ordinary city residents, with the reconstruction of architectural landmarks vastly outpacing the rehabilitation of ordinary urban residential areas. Striking a balance between heritage preservation and the restoration of basic living standards represents a critical challenge for future development.
