Byzantine coins in Kievan Rus': An introduction

The article aims to present the basic data and problems related to the study of Byzantine coins in the Kievan Rus’, as well as their impact on the local coinages. Firstly, the study focuses on Byzantine coin finds in Eastern Europe and it determines the periods during which the influx of Byzantine coins was considerable. Secondly, it discusses the Byzantine influence on the iconography of coins struck by the Kievan princes and the rulers of Tmutarakhan. Despite the fact that the number of Byzantine coins entering these territories was relatively small and they, most probably, did not serve as media of exchange, their impact was rather significant. Their role was related mainly to the idea of prestige, as expressed through the influence of Byzantine iconography on Rus’ coins. The representations of the rulers of Rus’ in a manner similar to that of Byzantine emperors was a clear visual expression of their much-desired connection with the Byzantine empire and culture.
