Empresses on Early Byzantine Coins (Sixth to Seventh Centuries): Evidence of Power?
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The chapter examines the representations of empresses on late Roman and early Byzantine coins, highlighting significant changes in how imperial women were represented during the sixth and seventh centuries compared to earlier periods. While nearly all fifth-century emperors featured imperial women on their coinage—resulting in the depiction of nine Augustae—only five of the fifteen emperors in the sixth and seventh centuries included empresses on their coins. This study explores the significance of these depictions, the factors that influenced their inclusion, and the role of imperial consorts in shaping imperial propaganda during this era.
