Family Dynamics in the Late Byzantine Romances

Discussing the characters in late Byzantine romance, scholars often focus on the protagonists. This paper will center on the secondary characters, specifically the members of the family networks surrounding the heroes: their parents, siblings, and other extended family members. Do they serve merely a functional role? Is emphasis placed on the emotional bond between family members? What do these groups of relatives add to the narrative world? And how significant are the differences in the portrayal of these characters across texts? My aim is twofold: first, to highlight an often-overlooked aspect of these narratives, and second, to contribute to the discussion on classifying these romances. We identify common elements in the treatment of family members among the 'Western' and 'original' romances (Beaton's classification, 1996), between biographically organized narratives and those centered on the romantic couple (Moennig's classification, 1999), and between the 'popular' and 'courtly' (Yiavis's classification, 2019).
