Several weeks before the symposium national reports from the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary and comprehensive papers from Poland were sent to the national teams and to 10 experts and some other invited persons from 11 European countries and Japan. Someof the experts added in the same way there specialized studies. After short introductory presentations of the representatives of the national teams and commentaries of the experts free exchange of opinions divided into four themes followed. Practicallyall participants of the symposium stressed the historical (transformational) and nationally specific character of the postsocialist developments with many unpreviewed and not only positive social effects and with open future and the necessity of facing the actual challenges of modernization concerning both the completion of the industrial and continuation of the post-industrial developments leading to substantial change in quality of life of broad strata of the population.
