Declaring the town Kladno in 1983 by Czech government as an 'important large city' could be interpreted as a try to establish a shop window of socialism, as well as an attempt to corrupt the working class. The text answers the questions how did it affectconcretely local population and local government? What did it tell about the regime and its power structures at the sub-national level? The smoothness of regime change in 1989 in Kladno raises further questions about the absolute domination of communistparty and the evolutions of Czech society in the eighties.
