Reliefs Depicting the Virgin and Patrons from the Convent of St. George at Prague Castle.
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The relief in the St. George Convent at Prague Castle arenof fundamental importance for the history of artisticnand religious culture in the Přemyslid era. This articlenpresents the results of a monographic study of thesenworks, while taking into account all the relevant factorsnthat might shed a light on their conception, creation, nthe origin of their creators and the models they drew on,nas well as the intentions of those commissioning them, ntheir location and function. Clues as to their originalnfunction are revealed, inter alia, through transcriptionsnof inscriptions and the identification of their sourcesnand the context of their appearance, or throughnthe deconstruction of sets of reliefs and an examinationnof alternatives to the original identification of placenand date of the individual parts of a set. The reliefsnprobably originally comprised three separate units:nthe archivolts created at the time of the rebuilding ofnthe convent under Abbess Bertha as part of the exteriornportal (after 1142), the relief of the Madonna shortlynafter the death of the Abbess as part of the altarpiecen(c. 1187), and the reliefs of benefactors not long after that, nfollowing the coronation of Přemysl (Ottokar) I (1198).nA stylistic and comparative analysis of the situation innquestion, when in Bohemia there was probably no widelynbased production, established workshops, training, nstable inventory of artistic tasks, systematic receptionnof the work of important artistic centres, trends orntendencies, more than anything else reveals its ownnlimitations. Also examined are the processes of artisticntransfer, i.e. the possibility of contact with often distantncultural circles, where typological patterns and analogiesnof Prague reliefs occur. The iconographic and iconologicalnanalysis reveals a richly structured and layered conceptionnof subject matter, as well as references to devotionalntypes of image or to contemporary tendencies in religiousnthought. The synergy of text and image in the reliefs innthe St. George Convent provides a clue as to how an imagenspoke, sang, evoked responses, assumed or requirednroles, attitudes and actions on the part of the viewers, nencouraged their active participation in associated rites, nand evoked theological meanings that in turn promptednmeditation on the paradoxes of the faith.n
